In June, we had the chance to go rafting down the Smith River. We spent five days in a stunning, remote location, camping and fishing along the way. If you’re looking to enjoy Montana’s outdoor activities later this summer or this fall, but you’re held back by a nagging shoulder injury or pain, it may be that you just need some strength or range of motion exercise to support your freedom of movement!
When casting, your shoulder blade and shoulder joint move through a large range of motion. This requires stability in the shoulder’s rotator cuff muscles and strength of the muscles surrounding the shoulder blade to control the motion, as well as the mobility to move your shoulder throughout the dynamic range of motion. While rowing, you engage in pushing and pulling, along with trunk stability and strength. The movements are dynamic and involve subtle accessory motions to make the movement possible.
If you’re planning a late summer or fall season trip, physical therapy can provide you with a structured movement plan that includes specific exercises to simulate the movements required for fly fishing and rafting. This can help improve your shoulder function, optimize your body mechanics, and allow you to fully enjoy your outdoor adventure without worries.
