Massage Therapy: A Therapeutic Approach

by Sarah Lucero, LMT

Massage therapy is more than relaxation. It’s a therapeutic approach that influences how your muscles, nervous system, and circulation function.

Here’s what’s happening in the body during and after massage:

  • Muscle tension decreases as tight or overactive tissue is manually released

  • Blood flow increases, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients needed for tissue recovery

  • The nervous system shifts toward a parasympathetic state, lowering stress and muscle guarding

  • Joint and soft tissue mobility can improve as restrictions are addressed

  • Proprioception, your body’s awareness of movement and position, can be enhanced

Different approaches, such as Swedish massage for relaxation, sports massage for activity related soreness or tension, or cupping for tissue decompression, are used based on individual needs.

Massage therapy can be a helpful part of supporting recovery, movement quality, and overall physical well being.
